This is a different approach to protest music. Michele Thomas' 'Messenger' album was released in September 2012 and Stevie Wonder is featured. I like the "Big Brother" cut because it's remarkably bubbly, given the subject matter.</div>

If I were a musician from the late 60s/early 70s, I would have wanted to be Country Joe McDonald. His Vietnam War protest songs were raw and powerful, but also witty and fun.</div>

I really like this song from his 'Paris Sessions' album (released 1973). It also appears in the album "Best of Country Joe", which was released more recently. <br />

The song starts about at 30:00. :)</div>

This is such an upbeat song....despite the fact that it's about the occasion of the death of a loved one and considering the possibility of rejoining them in the afterlife. If you're dealing with a grief experience, I expect you will find it to be uplifting. </div>

One of only 2 songs by them that I actually like. Personally, I think that the chorus is very primal. I like the way it uses the octave interval to ratchet up the emotional intensity. Here's a song to take the chill off by a rising country group whom I recently discovered. <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1388974564_0">Edens Edge</span>, performing "<span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1388974564_1">Skinny Dippin</span>" from their first album.</div>

The group uses traditional instrumentation and country blues elements...but I find their approach to be pretty fresh.</div>

I've been listening to Sarah Jarosz recently. She is widely acclaimed as a master of bluegrass mandolin and fiddle. The clarity of her singing and playing are simply beautiful....which makes her cover of <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1388451713_0">Bob Dylan</span>'s "Ring Them Bells" - featured on Vanguard's 'The Americana Sessions (Bob Dylan)' - pretty startling. There is such a contrast between the sweetness of the music and the terrible meaning of the lyrics. This is a very effective echo of Dylan's warning song about end times and coming judgement. </div>

Besides....it's always time for a good protest song.</div>
